Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday removed Speaker Mudashiru Obasa from office over allegations of statutory and financial misconduct. The lawmakers accused Obasa of engaging in multiple financial infractions, marking the end of his controversial tenure as Speaker.
Deputy Speaker Lasbat Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, was immediately sworn in as the new Speaker. Meranda, a former Chief Whip of the House, will now lead the Assembly following Obasa’s impeachment.
The decision to impeach Obasa comes on the heels of reports revealing alleged financial mismanagement during his tenure. Investigations by The Gazette recently uncovered that Obasa oversaw the withdrawal of ₦43.5 billion under the pretext of purchasing backup vehicles for lawmakers.

Impeachment Amid Controversy
Sources revealed that Obasa was not present during his impeachment, as he was reportedly in Atlanta, United States, when the decision was made.
Obasa’s tenure as Speaker, which began in June 2015 alongside the administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has been fraught with allegations of fraud and abuse of power.
In 2020, investigations by The Gazette and Sahara Reporters exposed how Obasa allegedly diverted public funds into private accounts and used them to acquire personal assets across Lagos. These reports sparked outrage and prompted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to summon Obasa for questioning.
Despite being interrogated by the EFCC, Obasa denied all allegations of wrongdoing, and no charges were filed against him.
