Suspected terrorists attacked Ekklesiyar Yanu’wa a Nigeria Church in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, killing two people and injuring two others. The attack, which occurred early Sunday morning, also left seven shops and parts of the church burnt.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Borno State Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident on Monday in Maiduguri. He revealed that the assailants struck at around 2 a.m., firing sporadically to instill fear in the community.
“We got a call from our Chibok Division. The report from them said the terrorists shot sporadically, and unfortunately, two persons died,” Daso said. “There were no worshippers in the church at the time of the attack. However, they also burned down seven shops as part of their efforts to intimidate the public.”
Among the injured were Esther Yohanna and Ali Yohanna, who sustained gunshot wounds. The police have since mounted surveillance in the area and deployed armed officers to reassure residents. “So far, we are keeping to the Inspector General of Police directive as regards the Ngazai attack. We have directed all human and logistics assets to be deployed to the axis to build confidence among people,” Daso added.

Community Leaders Respond
The Chairman of Chibok Local Government Area, Mustapha Madu, confirmed the attack in a statement issued by his media team. He disclosed that the terrorists struck at about 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, leaving destruction and fear in their wake.
Madu extended condolences to the families of the deceased and visited the scene to inspect the damage caused by the attack. During his visit, he assessed the burnt church auditorium, shops, and homes and expressed solidarity with the affected community.
Rising Concerns Over Security
The attack has further raised concerns about the security situation in Chibok, a region that has faced repeated acts of violence in recent years. Residents have expressed fear over the ability of law enforcement to protect their lives and properties.
The police have assured the public of their commitment to restoring peace and preventing further attacks. “We are working round the clock to ensure that this axis is secure and that residents feel safe to go about their daily activities,” ASP Daso stated.
While the immediate community grapples with the aftermath of the attack, the incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in parts of Borno State. Efforts are underway to prevent further escalation, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
