In Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, a group of 40 fishermen successfully hunted down and killed a hippopotamus that had earlier attacked and killed Malam Usman Maigadi, a guard at the Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi.
The incident took place on Monday, as the fishermen, armed with bows and arrows, tracked and killed the dangerous animal in the Yauri River. Malam Maigadi had been fatally attacked by the hippopotamus on September 22 while carrying out his duties at the farm.
Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, the Chairman of Yauri Local Government Area, confirmed the successful hunt. He explained that the action followed a directive from the Emir of Yauri after the animal had claimed the lives of two individuals in separate incidents.
“If you recall, the hippo killed the Emir’s guard and another farmer in September. We can’t keep an animal that is killing people randomly, especially when those who were killed were not even threatening the animal. They were simply going about their fishing business,” Shu’aibu stated.
After the hippopotamus was killed, the fishermen transported its massive body in a large canoe to the palace of the District Head of Gungu, Alhaji Kasimu Aliyu, where a large crowd gathered to applaud their bravery.
