A burning bus at an accident scene

An auto crash along the Ore-Lagos highway in Ondo State has claimed the lives of 28 passengers, who were burnt beyond recognition in the deadly collision. The tragic incident occurred at Onipetsi, in the Odigbo local government area, when two vehicles collided head-on.

Samuel Ibitoye, the Ondo State Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the crash and explained that only two of the 30 passengers involved in the accident survived, both of whom are currently receiving medical treatment in a nearby hospital.

“The 28 victims were burnt beyond recognition in the fatal accident caused by a head-on collision between two vehicles at Mile 49 along the Ore-Lagos expressway,” Ibitoye stated.

He revealed that the crash was caused by excessive speeding and traffic violations, which led to the tragic collision.

The victims, all passengers in the two vehicles, died at the scene, and the impact of the crash left their bodies unidentifiable. The remains of the deceased have been taken to the General Hospital in Ore for further handling, while the two survivors, who sustained serious injuries, are also being treated at the same hospital.

“It’s unfortunate that 28 lives were lost in such a tragic manner, burnt beyond recognition due to reckless driving and excessive speeding,” Ibitoye said.

He emphasized the critical need for drivers to exercise caution and patience on the road.

The FRSC Commander urged passengers to play an active role in ensuring their safety by cautioning drivers against reckless behavior and, when necessary, reporting such drivers to FRSC personnel on the highway.

“The contract between drivers and passengers is to take them safely to their destinations after they have paid—not to drive them to their graves. This is why everyone must participate in road safety. Passengers, too, have a responsibility to make sure drivers are not engaging in dangerous practices,” Ibitoye added.

Ibitoye further called on all drivers to slow down and be patient while driving to help prevent accidents and save lives. He also assured the public that an investigation into the accident would be carried out to determine further details surrounding the incident.
