APC Denies Being Declared Terrorist Group by Canadian Court

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports claiming that a Canadian court labelled the ruling party a terrorist organisation.

In a statement on Friday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said the reports were “false and misleading,” and urged party supporters and Nigerians to ignore them.

“We wish to state categorically that the Canadian court did not declare APC as a terrorist organisation,” Mr Morka said.

The reports followed a June 17, 2025 ruling by Justice Phuong Ngo of the Canadian Federal Court, which rejected an asylum request made by a Nigerian politician, Douglas Egharevba. Some media outlets claimed the court had classified both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as terrorist groups.

Mr Morka clarified that the ruling focused only on Mr Egharevba’s past membership of the PDP.

“In the decision, the court found that the applicant was inadmissible to Canada because he was a member of the PDP, which the court said engaged in subversive acts during elections,” he explained.

He added that the court only mentioned the APC briefly in the background information provided by Mr Egharevba, who claimed he was a member from 2007 to 2017. Mr Morka pointed out this claim could not even be true because the APC did not exist until 2013.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we make bold to state that the court never made any determination on the question of terrorism in its decision,” he said.

Mr Morka also noted that even if such a declaration had been made, it would have had no legal effect in Nigeria as the APC was not a party to the case and the Canadian court had no authority over political parties in other countries.

“Clearly, reports that APC was declared a terrorist organisation by the Canadian court in this matter are patently erroneous, if not mischievous,” he concluded.

The APC encouraged journalists to verify their information before publication and reassured Nigerians that the party remains a lawful and democratic organisation.
