Nollywood has lost one of its young stars. Omotola Odunsi, also known as Motola the Actor, has died at the age of 31.

Actor Akinola Akano, popularly known as Segbowe, confirmed her death by sharing a screenshot of their last conversation on Instagram. In the message, Omotola had said she was feeling better after being unwell, making the news of her sudden death even more shocking.

“Motola! Ah! Strange… but I tried checking on you at the wee hours… Journey well, sister. God be with your family,” Segbowe wrote.

Born and raised in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Omotola came from a family based in Ago-Iwoye. She studied Microbiology at Olabisi Onabanjo University, where she developed a strong interest in acting. She began her career in stage plays with Lateef Adedimeji’s drama troupe.

Omotola worked briefly as a bank credit officer before quitting her job in 2019 to fully pursue acting. She had earlier joined Odunlade Adekola’s film school in 2018, which helped launch her into the Yoruba movie scene.

She became known for her roles in Yoruba-language films like Lisabi: The Uprising, Ajanaku, and Doctor Adunni. Her performances earned praise for their depth and emotion.

Her mentor, Odunlade Adekola, reacted to her death with a short message on his Instagram story:

“Jesus Christ. Rest in peace, Omotola.”

Actress Ashabi Simple, one of her close friends, also shared her grief.

“You’re one of the best actors I’m rooting for… We promised to feature each other in our next project… You laboured and didn’t await your harvest,” she said.

Tributes continue to pour in online as fans and colleagues remember Omotola for her talent, kindness, and dedication to her craft.
