Academic activities at Lagos State University (LASU) have come to a halt as major staff unions began an indefinite strike on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
The strike was declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
In a letter addressed to Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the union leaders said the strike will continue until all their demands are met. The letter was signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare, Secretary Sylvester O. Idowu, SSANU-LASU Chairman Oluwaseyi Lawal, and Secretary Waheed Majekodunmi.
“We write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University,” the statement read.
They instructed all staff members, including those at LASUCOM (College of Medicine, Ikeja) and LASU Epe campus, to stop work immediately and leave their duty posts.
“The strike action will be in force INDEFINITELY until all the demands of staff members are met by the appropriate authorities,” the unions added.

Although the unions did not publicly list their specific demands in the notice, sources say they are protesting against unresolved issues with the university management, which have been ongoing for months.
The strike comes just days before students were scheduled to begin their second semester exams for the 2024/2025 academic session on Monday. The situation has left many students confused and worried.
“We were preparing for exams next week, and now everything is uncertain,” said a LASU student who asked to remain anonymous.
