Former senator Dino Melaye has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party no longer has the strength to solve Nigeria’s problems.
Melaye announced his decision on Thursday, July 4, 2025, in a letter he posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The letter was addressed to the PDP chairman in his local ward in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
He wrote: “This decision became imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”

Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in Kogi State in 2023, said he could no longer support or be part of the party.
“After deep reflection on the state of the party, I can no longer, in good conscience, continue to participate in its activities. Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” he said.
He also thanked the PDP for the chance to serve under the party during his years of membership.
Melaye’s resignation comes at a time when several top members are leaving the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. Just days earlier, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also left the party.
Atiku, in his own letter dated July 14, 2025, said there were “irreconcilable differences” within the PDP and that the party had strayed from its founding principles.
With these high-profile exits, Nigeria’s political scene is already heating up as the race for 2027 begins.
