Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja, has granted academic amnesty to students involved in examination misconduct over the past five academic sessions.
The Senate of the university approved the amnesty during its 189th Regular Meeting held on May 28, 2025. The amnesty applies to offences committed between the 2020/2021 academic year and the first semester of the 2024/2025 session.
The decision followed recommendations from the Central Examination Misconduct Committee and was made under Section 19(1) of the University of Abuja Act.

In a statement signed by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the university said the amnesty was not politically motivated and was intended to ensure fairness.
“The students who benefitted from this amnesty cut across all faculties and levels. The decision was a result of careful consideration and aimed at ensuring fairness in academic justice,” Dr. Yakoob said.
He added that the university remains committed to upholding discipline and will continue to take examination misconduct seriously. However, the Senate also reserves the right to step in and resolve pending cases when needed.
Dr. Yakoob said the university remains dedicated to transparency and integrity, and will continue to follow academic regulations set by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other regulatory bodies.
