The United States Embassy in Nigeria has warned that Nigerians who plan to travel to America just to give birth so their children can get U.S. citizenship will be denied visas.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the U.S. Mission said using a visa for the purpose of giving birth in the U.S. is not allowed.
“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted. Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent,” the embassy said.

This move is part of stricter immigration measures under former President Donald Trump’s policies. Trump had previously tried to end the right to U.S. citizenship by birth for children born to immigrants, although his efforts faced legal challenges.
Recently, the U.S. government also cut down the visa length for Nigerian visitors. Nigerians who once got five-year visas for non-official and non-immigrant visits will now receive visas valid for only three months.
The embassy’s latest warning is meant to stop Nigerians from misusing visas by travelling to the U.S. only to give birth. It urged applicants to be honest about their travel plans when applying for visas.
