Super Falcons of Nigeria emerged WAFCON 2025-champions

Nigeria’s Super Falcons made an impressive comeback on Saturday to defeat Morocco 3–2 and win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy in a thrilling final.

Morocco started strong, scoring twice in the first half. Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring in the 12th minute, and Sanaâ Mssoudy added another in the 24th minute, giving Morocco a 2–0 lead.

But the Super Falcons refused to give up. In the 64th minute, Esther Okoronkwo scored from the penalty spot to make it 2–1. Just seven minutes later, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi equalised for Nigeria with a fine finish in the 71st minute.

The match-winner came late in the game when Jennifer Echegini found the net in the 88th minute, completing a remarkable turnaround.

“It was all about belief and teamwork. We knew we could come back, and we did it for Nigeria,” said Okoronkwo after the match.

The Super Falcons were stronger in most areas of the game. They had 14 shots compared to Morocco’s 10, and five of those were on target. Nigeria also controlled 55% of the possession, completed 280 passes with 69% accuracy, and won five corners, while Morocco had three.

Despite the intense action, the match remained fair. No yellow or red cards were given, though Nigeria committed seven fouls and Morocco had 12.

This victory adds another title to the Super Falcons’ impressive record and proves once again why they are one of the best women’s football teams in Africa.

“We’re proud of our girls. They showed true character and the heart of champions,” said Nigeria’s coach.
