Nigerian football star Asisat Oshoala has announced her retirement from international football at the age of 30. The six-time African Player of the Year made the announcement on Facebook on Monday night, just hours before Nigeria’s semi-final match against South Africa at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Oshoala said she made the decision to give younger players a chance to shine.
“At 30, with six African Women’s Best Player awards, I will bow out to start a new chapter after WAFCON 2024/25,” she wrote.
She also thanked her fans and the nation for their support.
“Thank you for your unwavering support. I’m forever grateful for the love and sacrifices shared with me throughout this journey,” she added.

Oshoala is widely seen as one of Africa’s greatest female footballers. She won the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award a record six times — in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Her success, both in Africa and internationally, has inspired many young girls to pursue football.
She played for top clubs, including Barcelona Femeni, and made a name for herself with her speed, strength, and goal-scoring skills.
