A top member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has claimed that the party’s recent coalition was secretly designed to promote former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s plan to run for president in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kachikwu said the coalition, which was launched earlier in July, was never a true alliance. Instead, he believes it was “packaged” to help Atiku.
“The whole ADC structure is being packaged for the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. It was just a vehicle for Atiku Abubakar’s ambition,” Kachikwu said.
The coalition was launched by ADC along with other opposition leaders, including Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate. The goal, according to the group, was to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
However, only two days after the launch, Peter Obi announced that he would run for president in 2027, even though he remains a member of the Labour Party.

Reacting to this, Kachikwu said Obi had discovered that the coalition was not built to support all opposition voices, but mainly to favour Atiku.
“Someone like Mr Peter Obi now understands that the whole coalition was packaged for Atiku Abubakar. From our understanding, what we are seeing now is that he is looking in other directions,” he said.
Kachikwu added that many other opposition politicians who had hoped to benefit from the alliance are now stepping back after realising the true purpose of the coalition.
He also promised to resist efforts by powerful politicians to use the ADC for personal gain.
“The 2027 election will not give room for class exploitation by political leaders. I will ensure that Nigerians are informed and educated about their political power as citizens,” Kachikwu declared.
