The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has stopped politicians and government officials from speaking on the pulpit during church services.
This new rule came after public anger over remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, at a thanksgiving service in Abuja.
Wike, speaking at St James’ Anglican Church in Asokoro, made political statements during the service.
He criticised the church for almost making what he called a “costly mistake” during the 2023 elections.
He also attacked Labour Party’s Peter Obi, saying Obi would “never be president,” and spoke about Nigeria’s condition before President Bola Tinubu took office.

In reaction, the Anglican Church said it would no longer allow political speeches from the pulpit.
The Primate of the Church, Henry Ndukuba, signed a memo on Saturday saying the decision was made at a recent bishops’ meeting in the Diocese of Nike, Enugu State.
Ndukuba said the rule will “protect the integrity of Christian worship” and stop people from using church platforms for politics.
He explained that while the church welcomes everyone, including government officials, “it draws a clear line against any form of partisanship or conduct that could sow division among congregants.”
According to the new guideline, any guest who wants to speak during a church service must first talk to the church leadership. Also, the church’s lectern, which is used for reading the Bible, is now only for that purpose and not for political messages.
The church warned its leaders not to make comments that show support for any political group or person. They are also told not to praise guests in a way that could damage the church’s image.
Ndukuba said the church has a duty to speak on issues that affect the people, but its main role is spiritual.
“The church’s mission is to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. We must uphold the nation in prayer and guide those in power with truth and love,” he said.
