Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped to 44th place in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking released on Wednesday, their lowest position in six years.
This is the team’s worst global ranking since June 2019, when they were placed 45th.
The drop comes despite Nigeria’s recent unbeaten run during the international break. In June, the Super Eagles drew 1–1 with Russia in a friendly, beat Ghana 2–1 in the Unity Cup semi-final, and ended with a 2–2 draw against Jamaica in the final.
These results gave the team only a small increase of 2.91 points, raising their total from 1481.35 to 1484.26. However, this slight improvement was not enough to keep their position, causing them to fall one spot from 43rd to 44th in the world.
This marks the third time in nine months that Nigeria have ranked 44th, after previously holding the same spot in November and December 2024. They had climbed to 43rd in April 2025 but slipped back again in July.

On the African continent, Nigeria remains the fifth-best team. Morocco continues to lead Africa at 12th in the world, followed by Senegal, who moved up to 18th. Egypt dropped to 34th, while Algeria stayed in 36th place. Ivory Coast fell to 45th, staying just behind Nigeria after a poor run of results.
Other African teams also saw changes: Tunisia stayed at 49th, Cameroon dropped to 51st, Mali fell to 54th, and South Africa remained in 56th place after winning only one of their recent eight matches.
Globally, Argentina remains the top team in the world. Spain, France, England, and Brazil complete the top five.
Croatia re-entered the top ten, and Mexico rose four places to 13th after winning the Gold Cup. Costa Rica made the biggest jump, climbing 14 places after reaching the Gold Cup quarter-finals.
FIFA said over 200 international matches were used to calculate the new rankings. The next update will be released on September 18, 2025.
