Famous Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has advised young women to be careful when choosing a life partner, warning them not to marry out of desperation or pressure from society.
Speaking at a recent event with students, the award-winning writer said that marriage is a serious decision that can affect a woman’s life in many ways. She urged young women to avoid settling for the wrong person just to get married.
“It’s really important who you choose. Young women, choose wisely. Sometimes, you can tell that the person you’re with is not really a good person, but you’re desperate to get married. Don’t settle. Be very careful who you choose,” Adichie said.

“If you choose somebody who’s kind, supportive, it will make all the difference. So I can tell you that I chose well. There are some good men left,” she said.
Adichie, who is known for books like Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, has been married to Dr. Ivara Esege, a Nigerian doctor, since 2009. They have a daughter and twin boys.
She also recently spoke about reclaiming her identity by embracing her full Igbo name, “Chimamanda,” after feeling distant from her roots.
