The Federal Government has suspended two officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for trying to get an international passport for a prisoner.
Spokesperson for the NCoS, Deputy Controller of Corrections Umar Abubakar, confirmed the suspension in a statement on Saturday. He said the officers were caught through the Nigeria Immigration Service’s new automated passport system and other reforms.
Abubakar explained that the illegal attempt to get a passport for the inmate happened about two weeks ago and was discovered through cooperation between agencies under the Ministry of Interior.
“This act violated laid-down procedures and is totally unacceptable. Necessary disciplinary actions were taken, including the suspension of the two correctional personnel involved in the incident by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board,” he said.

The board is chaired by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Abubakar said the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, is committed to maintaining discipline, transparency, and professionalism in all correctional facilities in the country.
“The Service categorically states that any personnel found engaging in acts of misconduct, corruption, or sabotage will be shown the way out of the system,” the statement added.
The identities of the suspended officers were not released. An investigation is ongoing.
