Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, says President Bola Tinubu cannot win a second term in 2027. El-Rufai made this bold statement in an interview he shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.
According to El-Rufai, Nigerians have lost trust in both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu. He believes this makes re-election impossible.
“Anybody that thinks it is possible for President Bola Tinubu to get re-elected is living in another country, not Nigeria. It is impossible for Bola Tinubu to get re-elected.”El-Rufai said.
He added that even a weak opposition party would defeat Tinubu in the next general election because of how unhappy Nigerians are with the APC government and its policies.
“I don’t see a pathway for him,” he said.

El-Rufai also criticised politicians who are defecting to the APC. He said most of them are either looking for government positions or are afraid of being exposed by anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC or ICPC.
“It is greedy and hungry politicians, and those that are looking for money, contract, appointment, office, that are defecting. The other class are those that know the EFCC or ICPC can intimidate them because of what they have done,” he said.
Now a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), El-Rufai said he is working with a new coalition of opposition figures to challenge the APC in the 2027 elections. He stressed that the real political fight will not be between parties, but between the APC and the Nigerian people.
“We believe that the 2027 elections will be between the APC and Nigerians,” he said.
El-Rufai, who previously supported Tinubu’s 2023 campaign, has now joined forces with other major politicians like former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to lead the opposition against the current government.
