Afrobeats star Rema has said he is now enjoying success from the same things people used to criticise and troll him for. The Nigerian singer shared this in a recent interview while reflecting on his music journey and achievements, especially his tour in India.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, said it felt good to see how things have changed. He explained that he used to be mocked for his unique music style but stayed focused on his dreams.
“It’s just beautiful to see something that people trolled me for, criticised me for. And, you know, I’m benefiting from that. Imagine if I stopped. Imagine if I actually listened to the trolls and was like, oh, I think I should switch it off,” Rema said.
He added, “What, four years later, it paid and it paid. And more to come.”

Rema pointed out that he is proud to be the first Afrobeats artist to tour India, calling it a big achievement. His performances in India, including at the high-profile Ambani wedding, have helped open doors for Afrobeats in the country.
He said, “It’s a huge territory, right? And I’m actually the first person to actually tour India, you know, from the Afrobeats. And I even came from Africa. It’s not just about the wedding. It’s just about the reception [to the music].”
Rema’s story shows how staying true to one’s craft can lead to success. What once brought him criticism is now taking him to the global stage.
