The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
This means Nigerians will enjoy two public holidays in the same week, as Monday, June 9, was also declared a holiday to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir festival.
The Ministry of Interior announced the Democracy Day holiday in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday. The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, said the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the federal government.
Mr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, and peace is sustained and our future assured,” he said.
He praised the resilience and courage of Nigerians, saying, “The last 26 years tell the story of our strength and a hope renewed more than ever.”
Mr. Tunji-Ojo also said the Renewed Hope administration led by President Bola Tinubu is committed to the principles of democracy, which include the free will of the people to choose how they are governed.
Public holidays declared by the federal government apply across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. However, some private businesses and essential services like hospitals, markets, and security services may remain open.
