Some suspected thugs in Akure, Ondo State, beat up a vice principal after he stopped a student from cheating during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The victim, Mr. Rotifa, works at Complete Child Development College, Aule, Akure. He landed in the hospital after he seized a mobile phone from an SS3 student, Wisdom Elisa, during an exam.
Officials say the student’s mother was angry about the phone seizure and allegedly hired the thugs who attacked the vice principal.
The Ondo State Ministry of Education has condemned the attack and promised to increase security in the school for the rest of the WASSCE exams.
According to the Director of Schools, the incident began on Thursday when the student’s mother stormed the school and argued with the management.
“The situation got so bad that the school’s owner told staff to return the seized phone,” the official said in a statement.

Later that day, the student’s brother, a former student of the school, returned with others to threaten Mr. Rotifa.
“After school, the boys were seen hanging around the street. The school proprietor told Mr. Rotifa to report the matter to the police,” the ministry said.
Two police officers later took Mr. Rotifa in their van to look for the suspects. But on their way back, the boys blocked the police van, dragged him out, and beat him up.
He was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Although he has now been discharged, he has not returned home because he fears another attack.
The police are still investigating and trying to arrest those responsible.
“This kind of violence against teachers is unacceptable. We will ensure justice is done and take steps to protect our school staff,” said the education ministry.
