The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that the explosion near an army barracks in Abuja on Monday afternoon was caused by a suicide bomber.
NEMA said the attacker was wearing an improvised explosive device (IED) and tried to enter the Mogadishu Army Cantonment, located along the Mararaba-Nyanya expressway. The bomb exploded during the attempt, killing the bomber instantly and injuring one passerby.
The blast happened at about 1:47 p.m. on Monday. Security agencies quickly sealed off the area, and NEMA sent a response team to the scene.
“The suicide bomber was trying to enter the barracks without permission when the IED exploded,” NEMA said in a statement on Tuesday.
