Plans for a strong opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections are gaining ground as former Governors Rotimi Amaechi and Liyel Imoke have been named to head key committees in a new coalition.
The coalition, which includes top political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, is considering whether to form a new political party or join an existing one to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s government in 2027.
Dr Umar Ardo, Convener of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), revealed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday after the group decided to officially join the coalition.
Ardo said, “We resolved to support the National Opposition Coalition Group for the transitional politics towards 2027. Two major committees were formed—one led by former Governor Liyel Imoke to explore joining an existing party, and the other by former Governor Rotimi Amaechi to look into registering a new political party.”

Ardo, who served as secretary to Amaechi’s committee, also said the final decision will be taken on May 30. Options on the table include the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Action Democratic Party (ADP), in case forming a new party proves difficult.
“Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai brought a message that the SDP is interested in being considered for the coalition. The committee will decide whether to go with SDP, ADC or form a new party,” Ardo added.
He also spoke about the state of the North, blaming northern governors for worsening insecurity, poverty, and unemployment.
“We resolved to engage the 19 northern governors on the terrible situation in the North. Most of us believe the biggest problem is the lack of action from our northern governors,” he said.
Ardo concluded by saying the coalition would work to “mobilize the North and all Nigerians to pressure the government and lawmakers to defend and protect the Nigerian Constitution.”
