The Plateau State Government is building a 17.1-kilometre fence around the Jos Wildlife Park to stop people from encroaching and to protect the animals inside the park.
The Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Development, Peter Gwom, made this known on Thursday in Jos during a media briefing. He spoke about the work and progress of his ministry from May 2024 to date.
“We are constructing a 17.1km perimeter fence at the Jos Wildlife Park. The project is now 90 per cent complete. The goal is to protect the animals and create a safer environment for them by stopping encroachment into the park,” Gwom said.

He also revealed that the central administrative office inside the park is being renovated. Other improvements include the construction of a perishable food store, a generator house, and three public toilets. The park’s kitchen bar and chalets have also been renovated and upgraded.
Gwom added that the government is also working on other environmental projects. “We are currently rehabilitating the Plateau Club and fixing the 7.8km gully erosion site at Bingham University Teaching Hospital in Jos North Local Government Area. We expect to finish both projects by October,” he said.
To fight climate change, the ministry has given out 100,000 tree seedlings to farmers across various local governments.
“These trees are adaptable and will help reduce the impact of climate change,” Gwom explained.
He said the government remains committed to protecting the environment and preserving wildlife for future generations.
