Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama has opened up about how therapy is helping her adjust to a new stage in her life as she turns 60.
Speaking on The Jay Shetty Podcast, Michelle said she is currently in therapy because she’s going through a major personal transition.
“At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know? I’m 60 years old… I’m an empty nester, my girls have been launched,” she explained.
She said therapy is helping her sort through old habits, feelings of guilt, and even her relationship with her mother. “I now don’t have the excuse of, ‘Well, my kids need this’ or ‘My husband needs that’ or ‘The country needs that,’” she said. “Every choice I’m making is completely mine.”

Michelle called therapy a “tune-up” for the next phase of her life and encouraged others to seek help if they need it. “I am an advocate of it. Everybody needs to find their form of it, the best way they can,” she said.
She also addressed ongoing rumours about her marriage to former President Barack Obama. In another podcast interview with Steven Bartlett, she made it clear that the marriage is strong despite its challenges.
“If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” she said with a laugh. “He would know it. And everybody would know it.”
Michelle admitted that marriage has been “hard” at times but added, “I wouldn’t trade it.” She described Barack as “my person.”
“The beauty of my husband and our partnership is that neither one of us was ever really going to quit at it, because that’s not who we are,” she said.
Michelle has been doing several interviews recently to promote a new project with her brother, Craig Robinson.
