Delta State House of Assembly

The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Dennis Guwor, and 21 other lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Guwor announced the defection on Tuesday during the House’s first plenary after the Easter break. He said the move followed wide consultations with their constituents and state political leaders.

Guwor said, “Our decision was made after deep discussions with our people and stakeholders across the state. It aligns with Section 109 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.”

With the defection, the APC now holds all 29 seats in the House of Assembly, making it a one-party legislature.

Guwor explained that the lawmakers decided to join the APC to support the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and to attract more development to Delta State.

“We are fully committed to partnering with the Federal Government to deliver greater development to our people,” he said.

He added, “On behalf of the House, I commend Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his bold and wise leadership in making this strategic decision. We stand with him.”

Guwor confirmed that he received 22 letters, including his own, officially notifying the House of the change of party. He said the decision was also due to the ongoing crisis within the PDP at the national and regional levels.

“There is instability in the PDP national leadership and division in the South-South zone, which led to disunity,” he noted.

Following the announcement, Majority Leader Emeka Nwaobi moved a motion for the Assembly to adopt the letters of defection. The motion was seconded by Ferguson Onwo and approved unanimously by the lawmakers.

Speaking with journalists after the session, Nwaobi said, “We decided to move to the ruling APC because of the crisis within the PDP. Our move is in line with the Constitution.”

The lawmakers promised to continue their work and finish all pending bills before the current legislative session ends.
