The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.
Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme gave the ruling on Monday after dismissing Nwachukwu’s claim that he had no case to answer. The court found him guilty of causing his wife’s death on April 8, 2022.
Nwachukwu faced a 23-count charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. The charges included culpable homicide, domestic violence, cruelty to children, and criminal intimidation.

During the trial, the prosecution called 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, and presented 25 exhibits. Nwachukwu defended himself and called four witnesses while presenting four exhibits.
In her judgment, Justice Nwosu-Iheme said, “The prosecution has proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.”
Even after Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, begged the court for mercy, Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced him to death by hanging on the first count.
The court also gave him additional prison sentences ranging from six months to three years for other charges and fined him a total of ₦700,000.
Mrs. Aderonke Imana represented the prosecution during the trial.
Osinachi died at the age of 42. She became famous in 2017 after featuring in the gospel hit song Ekwueme with singer Prospa Ochimana.
After her death, many colleagues accused her husband of abusing her, which they said led to her death.
