A 16-year-old boy named Mustapha was killed by a stray bullet on Monday during an anti-cultism peace walk in the Oyingbo area of Ebute Metta, Lagos State.
The peace walk, organised by local youths, was meant to raise awareness and promote peace in the community following a rise in cult-related violence. However, the event ended in tragedy when a fight broke out among participants shortly after the walk ended.
According to eyewitnesses, the argument turned violent when a suspected cultist pulled out a gun and began shooting randomly.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Mustapha just came out to support the walk. He was not part of any gang. He is a calm and respectful boy. He was taken to the hospital after the bullet hit him but he died on the way.”
Another organiser was also hit by a bullet and is reportedly in critical condition.
