Former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, says the northern region of Nigeria will soon decide who it will support in the 2027 general elections.
He stressed that no candidate can win the presidency without the support of the North.
Baba-Ahmed made this statement in a video interview that went viral on social media on Sunday. He appeared in the video alongside Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme.
He explained that the North has suffered deeply in recent years, especially from insecurity caused by Boko Haram and other armed groups. He said that northerners are now wiser and will not support any politician who does not understand their problems.
Baba-Ahmed said, “We want a government that understands our problems and can address them. No politician can become president without northern support.”
He revealed that the North would take its stand in the next six months. According to him, when the North finally decides, the rest of the country will either follow or go its own way.

Baba-Ahmed previously served as spokesperson for the Arewa Elders Forum before he was appointed to President Tinubu’s cabinet. He recently resigned from his post to return to what he called “the struggle for the rights of the North.”
He also warned politicians planning to rig the 2027 elections, saying such actions would have serious consequences. “If they plan to rig the election, they should be careful. It won’t be good for Nigeria,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed stressed that the North is closely watching events, and both elders and ordinary citizens will soon speak up against what he described as injustice and marginalisation.
He said firmly, “The injustice and sidelining must stop. The North has been patient, but it cannot be ignored forever.”
Baba-Ahmed added that unity and fairness are necessary for Nigeria to move forward. He urged northerners not to be deceived or divided by politicians who do not have their best interests at heart.
