Danjuma Urges Nigerians to Defend Themselves Amid Rising Insecurity

Lt. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (Retd)

Former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), has called on Nigerians to defend themselves against bandits, terrorists, and criminals. He said people should no longer depend only on the government for protection, especially as insecurity worsens in parts of the country.

Danjuma gave the advice on Saturday during a public event in Takum, his hometown in Taraba State. He reminded Nigerians that he had given a similar warning five years ago and said the situation has not improved.

He said, “The warning I gave some years ago is still as valid today as it was then. Nigerians must rise and defend themselves. We cannot continue to sit and watch while bandits, terrorists, and criminal gangs massacre our people unchecked.”

In recent weeks, deadly attacks have taken place in Benue and Plateau states, leaving dozens of people dead and many others homeless. Danjuma said these killings show that the government has failed to protect its citizens.

He added, “It is now very clear that the government alone cannot protect us. We must stand up and defend ourselves, our families, and our lands before these criminals overrun the entire country.”

The retired general said communities must take action to protect their lives and property before it is too late.

Danjuma’s comments come as Nigerians across different states continue to suffer from frequent attacks by armed groups. His warning is likely to stir debate about the government’s handling of national security and whether communities should take up self-defense measures to stay safe.
