The Plateau State Government has signed an agreement with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to revive the long-abandoned Jos–Kuru railway line, bringing renewed hope to residents and businesses in the region.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed this week, marks a major step toward reconnecting communities, reducing transport costs, creating jobs, and boosting economic activities across Plateau State and beyond.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who was represented at the signing ceremony by the Commissioner for Transportation, Jatau Davou, described the agreement as a turning point for the people of Plateau.
Governor Mutfwang said, “This project is not just about running trains; it is about restoring hope and bringing prosperity back to our people. With this partnership, Plateau is moving closer to a future where transportation is affordable, business is booming, and our people have better access to opportunities.”
The Jos–Kuru rail line is part of the historic Kafanchan–Kuru route, which once linked Nigeria’s Eastern and Western rail corridors. The line, which had been inactive for years, is now being restored with plans to initially operate on the old narrow-gauge track before transitioning to a modern standard-gauge rail network as part of broader national upgrades.
Benefits for the People
The revived rail service is expected to significantly ease the movement of people and goods, especially for farmers and traders who often struggle with high transportation costs.
“Once fully operational, this line will help move agricultural produce, reduce travel expenses, and open up new markets for our people,” Jatau Davou added.
According to the NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, the project is a clear example of how collaboration between federal and state governments can produce lasting benefits for citizens.
Mr. Opeifa said, “This partnership shows that when leaders rise above politics and focus on the people, great things happen. We are not just bringing back trains—we are restoring dignity, creating jobs, and uniting communities through better transport.”

Jobs, Businesses, and Opportunities
Opeifa revealed that a dedicated business manager will be stationed in Plateau State to oversee the smooth operation of the revived railway line and ensure that services meet the needs of commuters and cargo owners.
He also noted that the initiative would create employment for local residents, encourage small businesses, and open up new opportunities in advertising, logistics, and even onboard entertainment.
He explained, “This railway revival will spark many businesses—from selling goods at train stations to offering entertainment services inside the trains. We will keep pushing to rail across Nigeria—from Jos to Borno, from Aba to Port Harcourt, and beyond.”
Community Excitement and National Unity
Residents of Plateau have expressed excitement about the project, which many believe will bring life back to communities that once depended on train services for survival.
“I grew up seeing trains passing through Jos. It was how people moved and traded. I’m happy my children will get to see that again,” said Moses Bitrus, a trader in Jos.
The Plateau government believes that reconnecting the Jos–Kuru rail line will not only support the state’s development plans but also help Nigeria achieve greater national integration.
“Trains connect people, and when people are connected, they build peace, trust, and progress,” said Commissioner Davou.
