A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread panic, damaging infrastructure, and sending tremors as far as Thailand and China. Many people are feared dead, though authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of casualties.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake hit around 12:50 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of the city of Sagaing at a depth of 10 kilometers. The quake was strong enough to buckle roads in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, and cause parts of ceilings to collapse in buildings.
The impact of the earthquake was felt far beyond Myanmar’s borders. In northern Thailand and as far as Bangkok, people ran out of buildings in fear as the ground shook beneath them. Some metro and light rail services in Bangkok were temporarily suspended as a precaution.
“I heard a loud noise, and I was sleeping at home. I ran as far as I could in my pyjamas, straight out of the building,” said Duangjai, a resident of Chiang Mai, a popular tourist city in northern Thailand.
China’s earthquake monitoring agency also reported that the tremors were felt in Yunnan province, where it recorded the quake at a magnitude of 7.9.

Myanmar has a history of devastating earthquakes due to its location along the Sagaing Fault, which runs north to south through the center of the country. Between 1930 and 1956, six powerful earthquakes of 7.0 magnitude or higher struck near the fault line.
In 2016, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in the ancient city of Bagan killed three people and caused significant damage to historic temples.
Myanmar’s medical and emergency response systems are already under strain, especially in rural areas. Given the country’s limited healthcare infrastructure, authorities fear the number of casualties could rise as rescue efforts continue.
Rescue teams and emergency workers are assessing the damage and searching for survivors. Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious, as aftershocks could follow.
There are concerns that the quake may have caused further damage in remote regions where communication is limited. The full extent of the disaster is yet to be determined, but experts warn that Myanmar’s weak infrastructure could mean significant destruction in some areas.
