A violent clash in Shimankar, a community in Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State, has left many injured and caused significant property damage after a disagreement between traditional worshippers and some youths. Several houses and business centers were set ablaze as tensions escalated over a traditional festival.
The conflict began during the annual ‘Kool Kwateng’ festival, a ritual performed to usher toddlers into adulthood through circumcision rites. According to sources, some youths opposed the practice, leading to a heated confrontation that quickly turned violent.
Eyewitnesses reported that panic spread across the community as angry youths torched buildings and disrupted business activities. Women and children were seen fleeing for safety as the situation spiraled out of control.
The chairman of Shendam Local Government Council, Kemi Nshe, confirmed the incident, blaming the violence on a misunderstanding that was exploited by criminal elements.
“There was a misunderstanding among the natives and some youths, and the situation was hijacked by some criminal elements who resorted to burning houses and shops. People were injured, and property was destroyed in the process,” Nshe said.

Security forces were deployed to contain the violence, and according to Nshe, their swift intervention prevented further destruction. “Normalcy has returned to the troubled community,” he assured.
Meanwhile, Senator Simon Lalong, who represents Plateau South Senatorial District, condemned the incident, calling it an unfortunate development. In a statement released by his media adviser, Simon Makut, the senator urged residents to embrace dialogue as the best way to resolve conflicts.
“I urge all parties involved to show restraint and engage in peaceful discussions to settle their differences. Violence is not the answer,” Lalong stated.
He also commended law enforcement agencies and traditional leaders for their prompt response in calming tensions and preventing further bloodshed. Additionally, the senator called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to identify the root cause of the conflict and ensure that those responsible for disturbing the peace are brought to justice.
