Third Mainland Bridge

A woman, yet-to-be-identified, has reportedly ended her life by jumping off the Third Mainland Bridge into the Lagos lagoon. Despite quick intervention by marine police officers stationed in the area, she could not be saved.

The tragic incident happened on Thursday afternoon near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront. Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development in a statement.

“Today, March 13, 2025, at about 1600 hours, an unidentified woman reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water near the UNILAG waterfront at approximately 1500 hours,” Hundeyin said.

He added that a team of marine police officers recovered her body at the UNILAG shore slipway, but despite their efforts, she was confirmed dead by UNILAG medical doctors in the presence of officers from the Sabo Police Division.

Her remains have been taken to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba for preservation.

Suicides on the Rise Amid Economic Hardship

This latest case adds to the growing number of suicides reported across Nigeria, as many struggle with economic hardship, unemployment, and rising costs of living.

In January 2024, Amarachi Ugochukwu, a marketing employee with a bank in Ikorodu, Lagos, reportedly took her own life due to financial struggles. She left behind a suicide note that reflected her distress.

She wrote, “Nothing is working in my life. My figures are low. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting harder. My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up. The future doesn’t seem bright at all. I see extreme hardship. I can’t bear the pain anymore.”

Similarly, in June 2024, Hassan Bayero, a businessman from Giza town in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, also committed suicide. He was reportedly duped and left with a debt of about N8 million, which he felt he could not repay.

The increasing number of suicides has sparked concerns among Nigerians, with many calling for urgent government intervention to address the economic crisis and provide mental health support.
