Popular Nigerian entertainer and politician, Obinna Simon, better known as MC Tagwaye

Popular Nigerian entertainer and politician, Obinna Simon, better known as MC Tagwaye, has officially left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Tagwaye, who is widely recognized for mimicking former President Muhammadu Buhari, announced his defection on Friday through a post on his official Facebook page.

Why MC Tagwaye Left APC

Explaining his decision, the comedian-turned-politician stated that the APC had strayed from its original mission and had failed to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians.

“After months of intense consultation and introspection, I, Obinna Simon, AKA MC Tagwaye, have made the bold decision to resign my membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and join the Social Democratic Party (SDP),” he wrote.

He criticized the ruling party for its failure to reward loyal members, its focus on older politicians instead of empowering young leaders, and economic policies that have made life difficult for low-income earners.

“The party’s glaring lack of a reward system for loyal members, its gerontocratic leadership structure, and its policies that perpetuate hardship on low-income earners have collectively sounded the death knell on my membership,” he stated.

Accusations of Poor Internal Democracy

Tagwaye also accused the APC of ignoring the voices of ordinary Nigerians while allowing a few powerful individuals to control the party’s direction.

“The APC’s internal democracy has been egregiously compromised, with a few power brokers dictating the party’s direction and disregarding the voices and aspirations of the majority,” he said.

Why He Joined the SDP

In contrast, Tagwaye praised the SDP, calling it a party that promotes youth involvement, fairness, and accountability.

“The SDP has emerged as a beacon of hope, with its unwavering commitment to the youth, internal democracy, transparency, and accountability. The party’s vision for a new Nigeria, where the welfare and progress of all citizens are paramount, resonates deeply with me,” he wrote.

Formal Resignation from APC

To formalize his exit, Tagwaye submitted his resignation letter to his ward chairman. He encouraged other Nigerians who share his vision for a better country to join the SDP.

“I am excited to join the SDP and contribute to the party’s mission to build a better Nigeria for all,” he declared.

“I urge all Nigerians who share my vision to join me on this journey. Together, we can create a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and our great nation.”

Political Implications

Tagwaye’s defection comes at a time when the APC is facing criticism over governance issues, economic challenges, and internal conflicts. His move to the SDP, a party known for its progressive stance, adds to the growing number of young politicians seeking alternative platforms to push for change.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, political analysts say that defections like Tagwaye’s could signal a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape. It remains to be seen how his move will influence his supporters and other APC members who may also be considering leaving the ruling party.
