The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to caution the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments about the Ijaw people. The INC expressed concerns that Wike’s remarks could create unnecessary tension in the Niger Delta region.
The congress was reacting to comments allegedly made by Wike, in which he described the Ijaw people as a “minority of minorities” in Rivers State and other South-South states, except Bayelsa.
INC Calls for Restraint
In a statement released in Abuja on Friday, INC National Publicity Secretary, Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, criticized Wike’s remarks, saying they were unnecessary and did not reflect the historical and political realities of the region.
“We will maintain peace and stability as we call on President Tinubu to caution him and redirect his focus to his ministerial duties,” Oyakemeagbegha stated.
The INC emphasized that it remains committed to promoting unity in the Niger Delta and ensuring that all ethnic groups in the region continue to coexist peacefully.
Ijaw People Are Not a Minority
Rejecting Wike’s claims, the INC stressed that the Ijaw people are among the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, with a population of over 40 million.
“They are the oldest tribe in Nigeria, as documented in history, and they are also the largest ethnic group in Rivers State, with eight local government areas. Additionally, they are not a minority in Delta State,” Oyakemeagbegha said.
The congress argued that Wike, having served as the governor of Rivers State for eight years, should have a better understanding of the state’s ethnic composition and history.
“Given his tenure as governor, we expected a more informed understanding of the state’s history,” the INC stated.

Ijaw People Advocate for Equity
The INC also reaffirmed its commitment to fairness and justice for the people of the Niger Delta.
“The Ijaw have consistently advocated for fairness and equity in the Niger Delta region and the South-South, and we will not be swayed by individual attempts to provoke us,” Oyakemeagbegha added.
The congress urged political leaders to avoid divisive statements and focus on policies that promote national unity and development. It also reassured the public that the Ijaw people would continue to support peaceful coexistence in the region.
