Former President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that he remains committed to the party that supported his two-term presidency.
His statement comes at a time when some high-profile politicians, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, have defected from the APC. El-Rufai recently joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), sparking speculation that more political figures might leave the ruling party.
However, Buhari dismissed any doubts about his political allegiance. In a statement released on Thursday by his media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu, he emphasized his dedication to the APC.
Buhari: “I Am an APC Member”
“Without referring to any individual, group, or ongoing discussions within the party, former President Muhammadu Buhari reiterates that he remains a committed member of the APC and wishes to be recognized as such,” the statement read.
Buhari also made it clear that he has no intention of abandoning the party. “I am an APC member, and I like to be addressed as such. I will try to popularize the party by all means,” he said.
He further assured supporters that he would continue to work toward strengthening the party. “He wants to leave no one in doubt that he would never turn his back on the party that gave him two terms in office and will do whatever he can to promote and strengthen it,” Shehu’s statement added.

Appreciation for APC’s Support
Buhari expressed deep gratitude to the APC for supporting his leadership and giving him the opportunity to serve as Nigeria’s president. He described this as the greatest honor he could receive and stressed the importance of preserving the party’s legacy.
“The efforts of APC’s founding members to establish a strong democratic party should be preserved and upheld,” he said.
The recent defection of el-Rufai has raised questions about the stability of the APC. Political analysts suggest that more party members may consider switching allegiance ahead of the next election cycle. However, Buhari’s firm stance is seen as an attempt to reassure loyalists and maintain party unity.
