There was drama in Port Harcourt on Wednesday as Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was denied access to the state House of Assembly quarters along Aba Road. The facility, where lawmakers loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have been holding their sittings, was locked, preventing the governor from entering.
Fubara, who arrived at the complex with top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, was visibly surprised to find the gate shut. Efforts to gain entry proved unsuccessful.
Governor Expresses Frustration
Addressing journalists at the scene, Fubara accused Speaker Martin Amaewhule of deliberately avoiding him. He revealed that he had made several attempts to contact the Speaker before his arrival, but his calls were ignored.
“Before my arrival here, I made several attempts to speak to the Speaker. I also sent a letter which was transmitted for this particular invitation,” the governor said.
Despite these efforts, he was unable to gain access to the premises. “Unfortunately, at the gate, you can see that the place is completely sealed, and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today,” he added.

Commitment to Serving the People
Fubara reassured Rivers residents that he remained focused on his responsibilities as governor. He emphasized that his actions were in the best interest of the people and that he was committed to fulfilling his constitutional duties.
“The reason why we are doing this, I have always said, is in the interest of our people, which is the most important thing. I don’t think there is anything to worry about. I expect to hear from them after today,” he stated.
Tension in Rivers Politics
The incident is the latest development in the ongoing political tension in Rivers State. Since taking office, Fubara has faced resistance from lawmakers loyal to Wike, his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The locked gates at the Assembly quarters suggest a deepening rift between the governor and the lawmakers, raising concerns about governance and legislative activities in the state.
After addressing the press, Fubara and his entourage left the premises. However, questions remain about the future of the political crisis in Rivers State and whether both sides will reach a resolution soon.
