The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians against making changes to their National Identification Number (NIN) data on unauthorised websites, stressing that such actions could expose them to identity theft and fraud.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 10, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, emphasised that modifications to NIN records should only be done through the commission’s official self-service portal.

The NIMC urged the public to follow due process when updating their details, warning that fraudulent platforms may attempt to collect sensitive personal data for illegal purposes.

Adegoke reassured Nigerians that the commission remains committed to safeguarding their data and ensuring that all modifications are carried out securely. He advised anyone needing changes to their NIN details to visit the official NIMC website or designated enrollment centres across the country.

The statement reads: “The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) wishes to state that in order to ensure the security and integrity of your National Identification Number (NIN) data, modifications can only be done on the official NIMC self-service portal: Selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng

“Do not attempt to modify your NIN data on any unauthorized websites, as this may compromise your personal information and put you at risk of identity theft.

“By using the official NIMC self-service portal, you can be rest assured that your data is secure and protected. You’ll also enjoy the convenience of updating your information from anywhere, at any time.

“So, remember: for all your NIN modification needs, click on Selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng.

“For further information and inquiries, kindly visit the NIMC website at nimc.gov.ng or send a mail to nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng or call the customer care line on 070022556462.

“Your security and peace of mind are worth it!.”

The NIMC’s warning comes amid growing concerns over cyber fraud and identity theft in Nigeria. The commission urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious websites claiming to offer NIN modification services.
