Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his resignation or face impeachment.

The chairman of the APC in Rivers, Tony Okocha, made this declaration on Monday during a press briefing in Port Harcourt. He accused Governor Fubara of disregarding due process and undermining the authority of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“We call on Governor Fubara to resign within 48 hours or face impeachment. The findings of the Supreme Court are enough for him to step down. He is already sitting on a keg of gunpowder,” Okocha said.

The APC chairman criticized Governor Fubara’s decision to invite lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, for discussions on the Supreme Court judgment. He alleged that the governor’s invitation was a deliberate attempt to interfere with the Assembly’s independence.

“Governor Fubara was fully aware that the House of Assembly was scheduled to sit on March 10, yet he invited them for a discussion on their remuneration, sitting venue, and the budget. He has no right to summon the lawmakers to discuss the Supreme Court judgment when his duty is to present the budget to them,” Okocha stated.

He further accused the governor of violating the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu, which was meant to resolve the political crisis in the state. According to him, Fubara’s actions demonstrate his unwillingness to respect the eight-point peace agenda.

Tensions have been high in Rivers State following political disputes between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The rift has divided the political terrain, with the state assembly members largely backing Wike.
