Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has banned loud preaching in markets across the state, warning that anyone caught violating the directive will face a fine of ₦500,000. The governor made this announcement while addressing traders at a market, believed to be Ochanja Market in Onitsha.
A video that went viral on social media on Saturday showed Soludo confronting a roadside preacher using a loudspeaker. The governor expressed his concern over the noise pollution caused by such preachers, stating that they disturb traders and residents.
“If you want to preach the word of God, go to your church. You are causing noise pollution here. You cannot come to a marketplace and disturb everyone,” Soludo said firmly.
He advised preachers to either rent an open field or conduct their activities in a church, where those interested in listening could seek them out. “You cannot force people in the market to hear your message. This is a marketplace, not a church. You are violating the law,” he added.

Soludo emphasized that the government had banned the use of loudspeakers in markets due to their negative effects on people’s hearing. He also warned against the growing number of fake pastors and prophets in the state, stating that his administration would take strict action against them.
“You will pay ₦500,000 because we cannot allow this. We are cracking down on fake pastors and prophets in Anambra,” he declared.
The governor’s directive has sparked mixed reactions among residents. While some traders welcomed the decision, saying it would reduce noise and create a more peaceful business environment, others believe it may limit religious expression.
For now, the state government remains firm on enforcing the ban, with authorities expected to monitor markets and ensure compliance.
