Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has officially filed a petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of sexual harassment. She submitted the petition on Wednesday during a Senate plenary session.

Speaking under Order 40 of the Senate Rules, Akpoti-Uduaghan reminded her colleagues that she had previously made these allegations during an interview on Arise TV. She said she was now formally presenting the matter before the Senate for investigation.

“I have come before this chamber today to submit a petition regarding my allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President,” she stated.

In response, Akpabio directed her to proceed with the submission. The Senate then referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for review.

Akpabio Denies Allegations

Earlier in the plenary, Akpabio dismissed the accusations, insisting that he had never harassed any woman. He defended his record, stating that he was raised by a single mother who instilled in him a strong respect for women.

“At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women,” Akpabio said.

He further pointed out that his commitment to gender equality had been recognized in the past.

“I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria,” he added.

The Senate President acknowledged that he had been receiving multiple calls about the allegations since February 25, as social media debates on the issue intensified. However, he urged Nigerians not to jump to conclusions.

“I appeal to everyone to allow the legal process to take its course rather than making assumptions,” he said.

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct will now review the petition and determine the next steps.
