Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to submit to an open investigation to resolve their ongoing dispute.
Saraki expressed concern over the controversy, stating that it negatively affects the integrity and public perception of the Senate. In a statement on his official X page on Saturday, he emphasized the need to protect the institution rather than individuals involved in the dispute.
“This situation saddens me because of its negative impact on the integrity, sanctity, image, and public perception of the institution. I believe that everyone who has been associated with the National Assembly—whether as a leader, member, or staff—should strive to protect these values,” Saraki said.
He urged both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan, along with their supporters, to be mindful of their actions and avoid tarnishing the Senate’s reputation. He stressed that Senate rules, parliamentary conventions, and the country’s laws should guide the resolution process.
Call for Open and Transparent Investigation
Saraki called for an investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions to determine the truth behind the allegations made by Akpoti-Uduaghan against Akpabio. He insisted that the process should be transparent, unbiased, and aimed at preserving the Senate’s credibility.
Saraki said, “The resolution should be conducted transparently, without any bias toward either party. The goal should be to uncover the truth and uphold the integrity of the legislative body, ensuring it is not wrongly perceived as tolerating or participating in any form of lawbreaking.”
According to him, a thorough investigation would prevent the Senate from being seen as an institution that condones sexual harassment, gender bias, abuse of office, or disregard for standing rules.

Drawing from Experience
Saraki recalled a similar situation during his tenure as Senate President when he was accused of importing an official vehicle without paying customs duty. He explained that he willingly appeared before the Ethics Committee to clear his name, and the investigation proved that the allegations were false.
“In my case, the decision to allow an open investigation and subject myself to it was not an easy one. It was humbling, but I realized that was the best decision, and in the end, I am happy I traveled that route,” he stated.
He urged the current Senate leadership to follow the same precedent, adding that no leader or member should be allowed to undermine the institution’s credibility.
Neutral Stand on Dispute
Saraki clarified that he was not taking sides in the dispute between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan.
“Let me make it clear without any ambiguity that I am neither stating that Akpabio is guilty of anything nor am I expressing the opinion that Senator Akpoti Uduaghan is right in her actions and claims. My position is that an investigation is needed to find out the truth and protect the integrity of the Senate,” he emphasized.
He concluded by calling on all lovers of democracy to work towards strengthening the Senate and ensuring that its sanctity remains intact.
“For me, the institution of the Senate is so important, sacred, and pre-eminent. All lovers of democracy should always work to strengthen it. No leader or member should be allowed to openly or surreptitiously work to subvert its sanctity,” Saraki added.
