Fenerbahçe coach José Mourinho has been banned for four matches and fined over €40,000 by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) for making controversial remarks after a heated derby against Galatasaray.
The 62-year-old manager faced disciplinary action after a goalless draw on Monday, where he criticized match officials and made a remark about the opposing team’s bench. Mourinho was quoted as saying that the Galatasaray bench had been “jumping like monkeys”, a comment that sparked widespread backlash.
Fenerbahçe defended their coach, claiming his words were taken out of context. However, the TFF’s disciplinary council ruled that his comments violated “sporting ethics”. The federation imposed a two-match ban for his remarks about the fourth official and another two matches for his comments directed at the Galatasaray bench.

In addition to the suspension, Mourinho was fined just over €42,000.
Mourinho, who took charge of Fenerbahçe earlier this year, has been under pressure as his team trails league leaders Galatasaray by six points. His suspension means he will miss key matches as the Turkish Super Lig season enters a crucial stage.
Despite the controversy, Mourinho has not issued a public apology. His comments on Turkish referees have also fueled further debate, with critics accusing him of disrespecting the league’s officials.
This is not the first time Mourinho has been involved in disciplinary issues. The Portuguese coach has a history of receiving bans and fines throughout his managerial career for outspoken remarks about referees and opponents.
