Authorities in Peru have launched an investigation after pop star Shakira’s medical records were leaked online following her recent hospitalization in Lima. The leak has sparked widespread outrage among fans and raised concerns over patient privacy.
Hospital Under Investigation
Shakira, 48, was rushed to the emergency room at Delgado Clinic on Saturday due to an abdominal condition. Her illness forced her to cancel a highly anticipated Sunday concert. However, shortly after her treatment, confidential medical details surfaced on social media.
Peru’s national health service watchdog is now investigating how the breach occurred. Ruby Cubas, a spokeswoman for the agency, confirmed that officials have already questioned the clinic’s management.
“Yesterday (Monday) we were at the clinic, we met with the officials, they have given their explanation, which is confidential,” Cubas told AFP. The investigation is expected to take 25 days.
If the clinic is found responsible for the leak, it could face fines of up to $430,000.

Clinic Promises Action Against Those Responsible
The Delgado Clinic, where Shakira received treatment, has condemned the leak as a “serious ethical breach.” In a statement, the hospital vowed to take disciplinary action.
“We have already identified and started the sanctioning process against those proven responsible,” the clinic said.
Medical confidentiality is a fundamental right, and the unauthorized release of patient information violates privacy laws in Peru.
Shakira’s Response and Tour Continuation
Despite the ordeal, Shakira returned to the stage in Lima on Monday night. The Colombian superstar, known for hits like “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Waka Waka,” expressed gratitude to her fans.
“Eternal thanks to my beautiful Peruvian audience!! So much love and care you’ve given me!!” she wrote on social media.
Her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don’t Cry Anymore) tour, her first world tour in seven years, began in Rio de Janeiro. Shakira is set to perform nearly 50 shows across Latin America before moving on to the United States and Canada.
A Pop Icon’s Legacy
With over 90 million records sold worldwide and multiple Grammy wins, Shakira remains one of the most influential Latin artists of all time. Her latest Grammy win for Best Latin Pop Album further cemented her status in the industry.
However, the recent leak has raised concerns over celebrity privacy and medical confidentiality, with many calling for stricter regulations to prevent such breaches in the future.
