The United States government has announced plans to investigate how past aid to Nigeria and other countries has been used. This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump suspended all foreign aid for 90 days, citing concerns about global destabilization and the need to align assistance with American interests.

The decision follows growing calls for a thorough review of funds allocated by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), particularly in the health sector.

U.S. to Monitor Past Assistance

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, the U.S. Mission to Nigeria confirmed that systems are already in place to track the aid given to Nigeria.

“Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that U.S. assistance reaches intended recipients,” the mission stated.

The review is expected to examine whether past financial aid achieved its intended goals and if adjustments are needed to improve future assistance.

U.S. Condemns Boko Haram Violence

The U.S. Mission also condemned the continued violence caused by Boko Haram in Nigeria.

“The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” the statement read.

Boko Haram has been responsible for countless attacks on civilians and security forces in Nigeria, leading to significant loss of lives and displacement of communities. The U.S. officially designated Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) on November 14, 2013. This designation allows the U.S. to freeze the group’s assets, prevent fundraising, prosecute members, and block their entry into the United States.

Commitment to Strengthening Security in Nigeria

Despite the aid review, the U.S. government reassured Nigeria of its commitment to working with the country and regional partners to combat terrorism. It emphasized its ongoing efforts to help improve security in West Africa.

The outcome of the aid audit is expected to influence future U.S. assistance to Nigeria, particularly in counterterrorism and humanitarian efforts.
