Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has dismissed claims that his administration plans to arrest women who do not wear bras or pants in public. The governor described the report as “entirely false” and urged residents to disregard the misinformation.
The controversy began after a viral video surfaced on social media, showing a group of local security operatives making an announcement through a public address system. In the video, an unidentified official claimed in Igbo language that Governor Soludo had given the directive. The security forces in question are believed to be members of the newly inaugurated Agunechemba security outfit.
Soludo: ‘The Report is Completely False’
Reacting to the video on Monday, Governor Soludo, through his spokesperson Christian Aburime, issued a statement debunking the claim.
“We wish to categorically state that this information is not only false but also mischievous and calculated to mislead the public and paint the state government in bad light,” the statement read.
The governor reassured the people of Anambra that his administration is committed to upholding human rights and personal freedoms.
“Although the government encourages decent dressing for all, it does not interfere with citizens’ personal choices of clothing or undergarments, as such matters are private and protected by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he added.

Public Reacts to Viral Video
The claim, which spread quickly across social media platforms, sparked mixed reactions among residents of Anambra State and beyond. Many questioned the legitimacy of such an order, while others criticized what they saw as an attempt to police women’s bodies.
“This is completely ridiculous. How can they even think of such a thing? People should be allowed to wear what they are comfortable in,” said Amaka Uchenna, a student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
Another resident, Chinedu Okafor, expressed concerns about the activities of the Agunechemba security outfit.
“If they are making such announcements in public, who authorized them? The governor should investigate this immediately,” he said.
Government Warns Against Spreading Fake News
Governor Soludo called on residents to ignore the false reports, warning those spreading misinformation to desist from creating unnecessary panic in the state.
“The Anambra State Government will continue to focus on serious issues such as security of lives and property, human capital development, economic transformation of the state, and urban regeneration,” he stated.
The incident has raised concerns about the spread of fake news and the potential abuse of power by security outfits. The governor has assured residents that his administration remains committed to their rights and well-being.
