Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo

The Anambra State government has intensified its crackdown on fake native doctors and criminal activities by sealing off a controversial shrine in Umuofor village, Okija, in Ihiala Local Government Area.

The shrine, allegedly operated by Ekene Igboegbueze, a self-proclaimed native doctor, was shut down after numerous complaints from residents. Igboegbueze is accused of deceiving people with false promises of supernatural wealth.

Prince Ken Emeakai, Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, said the government acted based on intelligence reports from concerned community members.

“Igboegbueze’s business is illegal under Anambra State Homeland Security Laws,” Emeakai stated. “The government will not allow criminal activities disguised as traditional practices to thrive in Anambra.”

He further revealed that the properties linked to the illicit trade have also been sealed. “All items found in the shrine will undergo forensic examination, and the results will determine further government action,” he added.

Security officials also used the occasion to warn residents, especially youths, against falling for fraudulent spiritual leaders.

Chinenye Ihenko, Director of Operations for Agunechemba Security Outfit, emphasized the dangers of patronizing fake native doctors and pastors.

“The activities of fake spiritual leaders are fueling a get-rich-quick mentality in the state,” Ihenko said. “Our mandate is to sanitize Anambra, and we are committed to that. Anything contributing to the desecration of the state or aiding criminal activities will be eradicated.”

He urged young people to seek legitimate sources of income and avoid engaging in fraudulent schemes that could land them in trouble.

Many Okija residents welcomed the government’s intervention, describing the shrine as a place of deceit.

“This so-called native doctor has been taking advantage of desperate people for years,” said a local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous. “We are relieved that the government has finally taken action.”

With the sealing of the shrine, the Anambra State government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling fraudulent spiritual practices and ensuring that only lawful activities thrive in the state.
