The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested a man and his girlfriend for allegedly getting married at a restaurant without parental consent. Hisbah officers stormed Banana Restaurant on Zoo Road, Kano, on Wednesday night after receiving a tip-off about the event.
Dr. Mujahideen Abubakar, the Deputy Commander General of Operations for Hisbah, confirmed the arrest on Thursday. He described the marriage as unlawful under Islamic law.
“It’s very unfortunate to tell you that the solemnisation of the purported marriage was conducted in the restaurant by friends of the man without the consent of the parents of the couple,” Abubakar said.

According to Abubakar, several guests at the ceremony fled when Hisbah personnel arrived at the restaurant. He stated that the board has launched a manhunt to arrest those who took part in what he called an “illegal solemnisation.”
“We arrested the couple. We are trailing friends of the groom who fled the restaurant after our personnel stormed the place,” he added.
The Hisbah official emphasized that the couple violated key Islamic marriage conditions, making the union invalid.
Abubakar warned that the board would not tolerate actions that go against Islamic teachings in Kano State. He assured the public that Hisbah would continue to uphold Shari’a law and prevent unlawful activities.
“The board will not fold its arms and allow some undesirable elements to continue to violate the Shari’a in the state,” he said.
The arrested couple remains in custody as Hisbah continues its investigation into the incident.
