Nigerian music legend, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has sparked a wave of criticism from celebrities and social media users after confirming his separation from his wife, Annie Idibia. The announcement, which was made through his Instagram account, has generated heated reactions, with many accusing the artist of insensitivity.
On Monday, 2Baba shared a video where he addressed his fans, stating, “I and Annie Macaulay have been separated for a while now, and currently filing for divorce. I will grant a press release soon to tell my story. Not because it is anyone’s right to know about my personal life, but because I love my people and need them to know my innocence or offence.”
Shortly after the post, the singer claimed his Instagram account had been hacked, sharing another message that read, “My Instagram account has been hacked, efforts are being carried out to take back control. #onelove!”
However, in a later twist, 2Baba posted two videos clarifying that his account had not been hacked and that he stood by his earlier statements. “Yo, my people man, nobody hacked my account. Nah me talk weytin I wan talk. You understand? I come in peace,” he declared in the video.
The public announcement has not gone down well with many celebrities, who have criticized the singer for airing his personal issues online. Popular TV personality Toke Makinwa expressed her disappointment, saying, “This is wrong on all levels, you should be ashamed for bringing this here. Bring it on, if you think she is alone; let me tell you here that you will have to fight us all.”
Makinwa further stressed the importance of women standing up for one another, adding, “If you sit on the fence on this one, if it misses, it will touch your daughter or any female in your family. Timing is everything. Empathy is everything. You constantly preach love, and you cannot add to the narrative that’s out there when you know what is happening behind closed doors.”

Nollywood actress Mary Remmy Njoku also weighed in, addressing 2Baba directly. “Bro, Annie has a family o! Your sisters-in-law are many, and we’ve stayed quiet out of respect for her tough choices, but since you’ve decided to humiliate her at her lowest, no wahala. It’s your choice. Just make sure she’s healthy and okay. Because when the time comes, we’ll have plenty of questions for you!”
Actress Uche Elendu shared her disappointment, calling the announcement a betrayal. “No love, no accountability, no loyalty, no culture, no bond, no memory, no decorum, no respect, no empathy. I am so disappointed at this betrayal and insensitive public announcement from 2Baba. At a time like this, love does not count errors,” she stated.
Big Brother Naija star Nina Ivy also criticized the singer’s actions, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and privacy in relationships. “Ladies, you deserve peace and respect in a relationship. A man who seeks public validation or uses your vulnerabilities against you shows a lack of emotional maturity and empathy. Protecting your peace and setting those boundaries is powerful,” she said.
Social media users have also joined the debate, with opinions ranging from outright condemnation to mild support for the singer. Meanwhile, efforts to reach 2Baba’s management for further clarification were unsuccessful as calls and messages were not responded to at the time of filing this report.
